Famous Russian tennis player helps Belarusian victims of Chernobyl disaster

Russian tennis player with a world name Maria Sharapova announced the program on grants with the volume of financing of 210 thousand dollars for students who are natives of the areas of Belarus suffered from the accident at the Chernobyl atomic power station. According to RBI news agency that was reported by the co-coordinator of UNDP information work in the Republic of Belarus Vladislav Hilkevich.

The program involves the common initiative of Maria Sharapova Fund and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with which the sportswoman cooperates in the capacity of a Goodwill Ambassador. Grants will allow 12 talented young people from the areas suffered from Chernobyl disaster to take a complete training course in Belarusian State Academy of Arts and BSU.

The program is initially planned for 4 years. Three new grant holders will be chosen annually out of the university entrants accepted as first-year students. For the first time in history of Belarus international non-governmental organization will give such an inland support. The first holders of grants will begin education in academic year 2009-2010.

Recently Maria Sharapova Fund has granted 100 thousand dollars for realization of projects for children and youth from regions of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine suffered from the accident at Chernobyl atomic power station in 1986.
