Alexandr Chernyak, Doctor of Historical Sciences:

- I’ve watched this film with great pleasure. The more so because I had to watch four other films about the fortress. The first one was based on the original story of S.Smirnov “Brest Fortress”.

The second one was a documentary film made by “Voen-TV” (Belarus). Watching it I was quite amazed at the fact that Hitler personally came to see round Brest Fortress which he planned to seize in a few hours, but stumbled so badly that his troops were standing next to this fortress for almost a month. He invited Mussolini, together they walked round for a while, found a fritted brickbat. Hitler was examining it for a long time and then took it with him. The brick was always on his desk, apparently, Hitler was trying to understand why he wasn’t able to defeat a Russian soldier.

In this respect the new film “Brest Fortress is a very interesting one. Thanks to computer technology the film produces a good impression, but I personally haven’t received an answer to the question: “What did our guys fight to the bitter end in the Brest fortress for?” They had the opportunity to escape and a part of soldiers went away, whereas they defended. So, unfortunately, the film hasn’t given a clear answer to this question.

I also watched the film “Krepostnye Geroi” (play on words “Serf/Fortress Heroes”) by Aleksei Pivovarov. To tell the truth, I’ve never seen before and had never wanted to see such nonsense, such nasty thing. That’s why, “Brest Fortress” by A.Kott and I.Ugolnikov is a big event in Russian cinematograph as well as in the Union State cinema. It’s a pity that Russian film industry followed the path of A.Pivovarov who pokes about all sorts of rotten things.

A.Kott’s film shows everything truthfully. The only thing not shown is the reason why the guys defended the fortress. But they did defend their motherland. They knew that behind their backs are their fathers, mothers, and their great country.
