Belarusian parliamentarians have seconded the legislation “On Ratification of Agreement about Peacemaking Activities of Collective Security Treaty Organization”. The day before, the deputies of the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly heard Leonid Maltsev, Minister of Defence of Belarus, and Valentin Simirskiy, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and CIS Relations at the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly, who submitted the legislation for Parliament’s consideration.

The Agreement was signed in Dushanbe on 6th October 2007 and aimed at ensuring security and stability in the area of CSTO responsibility and in adjoining regions, at effective participation of CSTO and its member states in the peacekeeping and security activities of the world community.

According to L.Maltsev, Belarus did not and does not participate in peacekeeping operations either within or beyond CIS. “There is a normative-legal basis of Belarus which includes agreements about peacekeeping activities within CSTO and CIS, but it only means that we agree with the provisions while the decision whether to take part or not is taken in accordance with the national legislation,” explained the Minister. At least for the time being, Belarus is not planning to participate in any peacekeeping activities. “Within CIS there is only one battlefield – Abkhazia-Georgia, where Russian peacemakers work. We concur with such position, but render no additional assistance, even financial,” informed the Head of the defence department.

He also added that Belarus has one peacekeeping company under the U.N.O., the representatives of which study languages and take part in manoeuvres.
