UN Information Committee meeting

UN Information Committee regular meeting is taking place in New York. Among the participants is Belarusian delegation led by the head of information administration, MFA press-secretary Andrei Popov. That was reported by the press-service of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.

When participating in the common discussion, the Belarusian representative in particular pointed out the necessity to increase the quality of information support of the most urgent issues of UN agenda. In this connection the participants’ attention has been drawn to the forthcoming thematic UN General Assembly debates on the problems of human trafficking and energy security that will take place in May and June in 2009 and was initiated by Belarus.

Belarusian delegation showed the support to the efforts of UN Secretariat Department on public information (DPI) towards the accelerated use of advanced information and communication technologies for the broadest distribution of information about UN activities.

A.Popov pointed out the necessity for continuation of DPI efforts towards equal use of all UN official languages during the work of UN information agencies.

Belarusian representative participated in the wide range of meetings with DPI leaders and in the regional office of UN Development program during which there were discussed in particular the issues of UN information coverage of Belarusian initiatives in the Organization including those aimed at overcoming Chernobyl disaster consequences in Belarus.
