Is “independent” press unbiased?

The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the Republic of Belarus commented on a number of publications in Belarusian mass media re mutual relations between Venezuela and Columbia.

Some publications in Belarusian mass media fatuously interpret the serious situation provoked by the government of Columbia. Let us remind that Columbian government launched a violent raid into the territory of Ecuador in order to eliminate insurgents.

Breach of the country’s sovereignty is not a trivial event. The slaughter committed by Columbian SWAT team on the territory of neighbouring Ecuador is the aggression against international law, an infringement of human rights.

As the consequence of the occurrence, Armed Forces of Venezuela are on the alert in order to prevent the repetition (under any pretext) of such action as far as it is a question of “Bush doctrine” tactics aimed at striking preventive blows on their neighbours in Israeli style.

President Chaves stated that he wouldn’t allow the sovereignty of Venezuela to be broken in one way or another. That is why the troops and other defense means have been mobilized towards the frontier with Columbia, which is 1200 km long.

As a result of severance of diplomatic relations with Columbia, Venezuela had to take under closer control the frontier points, which will adversely affect trade relations between the two countries. These relations also include the interchange of foodstuffs. But, according to Aliasa Haua, Minister of Agriculture and Land, food shortage will be filled up by allied countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Belarus.

But of course not all Belarusian mass media published such statements. We haven’t established the reasons of this fact.

One of them speculatively claimed that food problems seem “trivial” to Venezuelan government, which prefers to “develop its muscles” at the frontier.

Neither this, nor any other journalist’s opinion represents the facts. One of the main efforts of the Venezuelan government is bended to provide foodstuff for the most needy levels of population including millions of Columbian paupers many of whom have become forced migrants as a result of armed violence lasting for the last 60 years.

Protection of sovereignty is not a triviality. In the face of state terrorism from the direction of Columbia and all the more qualifying it as “developing the muscles” is not a triviality either.

Dear journalists, the facts named are not trivial. It is a severe and sad reality. We must repel them without resorting to trivial speculations.
