D.Rogozin: Union State is a real obstacle for NATO expansion to the East

In the course of video-conference Moscow-Minsk-Brussels Dmitri Rogozin, the permanent representative of the Russian Federation in NATO, told about the possible ways of further development of relations between Belarus and Russia with the Atlantic Alliance.

Why NATO strives for the East

“Why does NATO strive for the expansion to the East, why does the USA act so hard in many countries of the world practically shifting the role of UN to the second place?”, - wonders D.Rogozin. “Real attempts are being made by the USA and by their allies in the Atlantic Alliance to make NATO exceed its geographical bounds”, - he pointed out.

According to the permanent representative of the Russian Federation in NATO some Alliance states consider that Belarusians, Russians and other citizens of former USSR lost Cold War that means our lot is to watch how the victor will open up the conquered countries. But D.Rogozin also added that there are a number of NATO states that think otherwise. “In the West there are many sensible people who agree that security in Europe must be integrated and indivisible”, - he pointed out. Certainly, according to D.Rogozin, “without well-equipped mobile Armed Forces we will be ignored. That is why there should be a military shield to escape wars”.

Now time has come not to complain but to act, believes D.Rogozin. “We need to talk without any rhetoric but act for the unity of Belarus and Russia. Union State is a real obstacle for NATO expansion to the East”, - he said.

According to him we need do everything with the help of diplomacy to make neutrals out of enemies, partners out of neutrals, allies out of partners and friends out of allies because this makes diplomacy.” Any aggressor or a group of aggressors must be aware of the fact that they will be exposed to guaranteed destruction if they challenge our sovereignty”, - said D.Rogozin.

He also said that in September of 2008 at the Polish meeting of RF-NATO he is going to propose a more detailed picture of Russia’s initiative to conclude new legally binding treaty about European security.

“I am an adherent and a partisan of the most close cooperation of Belarus and Russia in all aspects including the issues of security”, - said D.Rogozin.

About possible accession of Russia and Belarus to NATO

This is impossible with a view to moods inside NATO because open-doors-policy doesn’t work in practice, believes D.Rogozin. “NATO invites those countries that are necessary for the development of its globalization, - he explains. – There always will be someone from NATO states who will just be frightened by the scale of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation with their opinion and sovereignty”. According to him we must take a delight in having a right to take independent decisions that concern our development the more so because the accession to the Alliance contradicts with the will of the both nations. A good answer to the NATO expansion may be the unity of Russia and Belarus, believes D.Rogozin, the more so because NATO in its current state does not appear to be a modern effective international organization. Answering the question about the possible accession of Ukraine and Georgia to the Alliance D.Rogozin said that from NATO such a step once again confirms its undemocratic approach to their policy. He reminded that the majority of Ukraine citizens don’t to join NATO and in Georgia they clearly ascribe extra percents to 60 % of Alliance supporters. “If we count Abkhazia and Ossetia not mentioning the very Georgia what 60 % do they mean?”, - noticed D.Rogozin.

About UN role in international conflict resolution

Many prominent NATO politicians tend to say that NATO must become global in the world and learn to solve the problems that now are outside their competence by swallowing up the former Warsaw Pact countries, pointed out D.Rogozin. “But if you ask any western politician about the UN role, no one will doubt its role as a public organization. But what do we need to save this organization? We may have different attitudes towards the UN: we may treat it as a big bureaucratic mechanism etc. But the UN remains a universal organization”, - said the permanent representative of Russia in NATO. According to him it may be necessary to reform the UN Security Council, “it has sense, but there is no alternative to the UN as such”. “I believe that the number of those states that are trying to play down the role of the UN is immeasurably small in comparison with those that don’t doubt the authority of the organization”, - expressed his confidence D.Rogozin. he pointed out that the shakiness of opinions comes from certain problems, “that seem to have regional sense but threaten the whole world law”. His cited as an example “the attempt to create almost a full-fledged state on the basis of Albanian separatist enclave”. “Certainly there is a will to finish off the remains of resistance to the general policy on the west European space, but more there is an attempt to shake the international law system that have existed for many decades and based on the respect to every UN state”, - supposed D.Rogozin. “Protecting Serbs we protect international law and UN system. And here we have many allies. However strong there is a desire to mess up the UN, no one will succeed in it”, - he assured.
