Agreement on light frontier traffic with Latvia and Lithuania can come into effect this July

Agreement on light frontier traffic with Latvia and Lithuania can come into force this July, reported Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Igor Rachkovski at the press conference.

Agreement on light frontier traffic with Latvia and Lithuania can come into force this July, reported Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Igor Rachkovski at the press conference.

The Committee Chairman said that within the framework of these agreements the work with Lithuania and Latvia goes on actively: “By July we will be fully ready technically, and then the work of the Foreign Ministries will start. A month after they exchange notes, the agreement will enter into force”.

At simplified border crossing points it is planned to distribute information leaflets which will specify the area that can be visited. In addition, certain issues of cooperation have already been negotiated with the representatives of the law enforcement agencies. Border guards together with the police are to organize joint border crossing points.

“A sensible person won’t want to go beyond the territory, as they understand that they will be deprived of this right (visa-free border crossing) forever,” says Igor Rachkovski.

When taking this decision, Belarusian border guards examined light frontier traffic in Ukraine and Poland. “300 offenders per year from 300 thousand people. And, as a rule, the reason is ignorance of the territory,” said the Chairman of the Committee.
