Alexander Lukashenko: Belarus is Equally Important to Russia, as Russia to Belarus

On October 20 the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and the President of Lithuania D. Grybauskaite, who was in Minsk on a working visit, met for an official round of talks. At the briefing following the talks Alexander Lukashenko commented on the current state of the Belarusian-Russian relations. President of Belarus said: "Do not magnify the current squabble or even reel in Russian mass media on Belarus." He recalled the recent words of Vladimir Putin Russian Prime Minister " a quarrel may happen even in a family." "We will build up relations with Russia. But it should be understood that as any other country Belarus is a sovereign and independent state and this state will exist. And if this is a state it is supposed that the relations with it should be build as is customary accepted by international standards, on principles of reason"- the Belarusian leader said.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that Belarus was not involved in this information squabble. "The things which are going on in our country become the issue to be estimated by some leaders in Russia, including the top ones, and that is their problem, - the Head of State noted. - We are not very concerned about it." According to the President of Belarus, despite all the problems that exist in relations with Russia, the countries have demonstrated good momentum of trade. Now its growth is about 50%. "The small controversies have left its imprint on some projects. But it could be any other state but Russia. This means that Lithuania will invest in those projects in which Russia was to invest", - the Head of State said. Alexander Lukashenko stressed that Belarus is very important for Russia, as well as Russia for Belarus. "Based on these pragmatic approaches, we must build a normal relationship.
