Belarusians Incorporated All Best Genetics of Europe

The history of Belarus is a history of struggle for the Belarusian people who have incorporated the best genetics of Europe, said Academician-Secretary of Humanitarian Sciences and Arts Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Aleksandr Kovalenya presenting books published by the Institute of History of the NAS of Belarus.

“As long as we live here, there has been a struggle for the Belarusian people,” stressed A. Kovalenya talking to journalists. “Belarusians are highly intellectual people who have incorporated all the best genetics of Europe”. “Just think how much Polish, Swedish, French and German blood we have! Biology always selects the best, everything else just does not linger,” he said.

“In this book we for the first time pay a due tribute of respect to the leaders of the Belarusian People's Republic who were the first to take the liberty of declaring and announcing to the whole world (the sovereignty of Belarus),” said A. Kovalenya presenting the book “Belarus: People, State, Time”. “And this is what we are doing today, what we are building today”.

According to A. Kovalenya, at that time the idea of an independent Belarusian republic didn’t capture the broad masses, but the leaders of the BPR were the architects of present-day Belarusian statehood, they were the ones who understood the idea of independence, who wanted to make it clear. “Of course, it was done during German occupation, but even in that very complicated situation, in March 1918, people sis ponder over the things that should be done,” said the scientist.

A. Kovalenya drew attention to the fact that “the idea promoted by Belarusian national intelligentsia, being sometimes on the intersection of Belarusian-Polish relations, sometimes on the intersection of the Belarusian-Russian relations, crystallized out and was put into practice only in 1991”.

“Today we are forming an independent Republic of Belarus guided by the ideas of our ancestors,” A. Kovalenya stated with confidence. “At present you can feel the pressure both from the East and the West. And in this tense, complex situation that Belarus is in now, republic's authorities are doing everything possible to maintain relations both with the East and the West”.

A. Kovalenya reminded the journalists that for centuries Belarus had been a geopolitical crossroads where the interests of East and West clashed. “When Alexander Lukashenko expresses the desire to preserve national independence, it appeals neither to the East nor to the West,” he summarized. “The future of our state will depend on someone who will own the keys of this geopolitical corridor”.
