On November 23rd in Barvikha President of the Russian Federation Dmitri Medvedev met with the representatives of Belarusian mass media and answered a wide range of questions, informs the press service of Russia’s head of state. The topic of the press conference was the tenth anniversary of signing the treaty on the Union State formation.

Talking about the importance of such meetings, Russia’s President noted that “taking into account close connection between our peoples, our countries and taking into consideration our union state, it seems to me it is very important when heads of states regularly communicate with the representatives of mass media”. In his opinion, such meetings should be not only serious but also regular.

Dmitri Medvedev observed that “Belarus is a close to us country, the country which we have signed a Union Treaty with, the home of a very close to us nation. Moreover, our economies are very closely connected”. He also added that “for us it is the territory and the state which is most closely allied with our country”. The president stressed that “everything that takes place in Belarus, takes place according to Belarusian laws and as provided by Belarusian regulation, Belarusian Constitution”.

Talking about the Union State, Russia’s President emphasized that it is the Treaty that contains major prospects of development. “It is true that the Union State is being formed at probably a slower pace than we expected. But I would like to stress that the set of institutions, the set of rules, the level of integratedness of our economies, the degree of consistency of our political action in this document [On the Union State formation] is much higher than if we were just partners. Why should we part from each other then? It is better to fill this document with real content, to correct something in it if we decide that some of the institutions are not necessary. But by no means should we reduce the level of integration,” he said.

Dmitri Medvedev stressed that at the present stage “we should saturate the Union State with real responsibilities”. “We should try to achieve a higher level of economic integration, to uniform trade rules, to exclude some restrictive decisions and conflicts thereupon. In this sphere we have enough to work on. That’s true,” he said.

In the course of the conference the President of the Russian Federation dealt with a wide range of questions concerning all areas of cooperation between Belarus and Russia.
